But when he finds out that Mak and his family are moving to Greece, Jed’s dreams kickflip out of his control. In his devastation over Mak’s move, Jed decides to quit skateboarding. But after a mysterious encounter, Jed and Mak receive an ancient treasure that comes with supernatural powers. Transformed into warriors named Lion Heart & Alessio, Jed and Mak are sent on a spirit-filled adventure that they never thought was possible.

In Megan Joy Chapman’s newest book, Mission: Gentleness & Self-Control, you’ll need a box of tissues, or two, or three. She has a way of bringing up real-life issues in a way that makes sense. For me personally, her series has touched several parts of my own story and helped bring some new perspective to it. Her newest book also encourages you to follow your dreams and “face your fears.” I identify with the character Jed because we are both worrywarts and resistant to do new, hard things. We also both have genuine desire to follow Jesus, but we sometimes let our fears or practical minds get in the way. Mission: Gentleness & Self-Control is a good wrap up to the Lion Heart & Alessio series. Through this two-part book, one can see the heart of the Father reaching out to His children, wanting them to know they are seen and loved. I can really identify with the hurt, pain, and unforgiveness that Grandma Anna battles with, before finding healing on the other side.
Also very relatable is the struggle of a young boy who works through the pain of a tragedy and breaks free from his crippling fears, in order to influence the world around him. This Lion Heart & Alessio book has touched my life, and I believe that all other readers will find it to do the same for them.
The Lion Heart and Alessio series is one of my favorites, and this final installment, Mission: Gentleness & Self-Control, definitely served it justice. This book not only captured my attention but also talked about touchy subjects in Christianity with grace. Megan Chapman did an amazing job showing how God provides and how fun a relationship with Him can be. She also showed that God can take something tragic and make it into something beautiful.
This series did wonders for me, furthering my relationship with God. The well-placed verses, always on topic throughout, made me want to read the Bible. As a teen living in New England, the least Jesus-focused region in the United States, I’m inspired by the storyline that Megan Joy Chapman has created to reach more people for Christ.
