Art

Hi, I’m Megan Joy Chapman, and this is my Art and Design Page where I share bits of my portfolio from when I worked as a Fashion and Costume Designer.

I’m also in the process of setting up a shopping cart to sell some mixed media pieces and cards. Feel free to peruse my gallery or contact me with any questions.

Megan Joy Chapman | Mixed Media Artist

Art speaks when we listen to the work. –Megan Joy Chapman, A personal revelation in 2020 after reading Madeleine L’Engle’s Walking On Water.

A professional introvert in my early years, creative expression was my best friend. Though . . . it seems strange that I got a C in my 8th grade art class. Apparently, I wasn’t good at following directions.

My art teacher in fashion design school, however, thought I had potential and encouraged me to pursue Life Drawing classes after graduation. I took her advice, but not reading the fine print, I didn’t realize that I’d be sketching nude people. I think I had mistaken Life Drawing for Still Life and was expecting fruit bowls.

I know I’m supposed to say that all God’s creatures are beautiful, but I don’t think all God’s creatures should be nude models (sigh). I also found it ironic that I had just graduated from fashion school and here I was drawing people with no clothes on. HA! Let’s just say I haven’t taken another Life Drawing class since. I’ve tried Still Life but found it wasn’t my thing either.

I started dabbling in mixed media art after my husband remodeled our home. I was so inspired by all the blank wall space screaming for color. I experimented with everything from fabric scraps to bottles. With my husband’s help, I designed a glass bottle chandelier. He built it for me and hung it over our dining room table. Working with different materials and textures has been so fun and satisfying. I learn something new with every piece.  And I especially love creating pieces that tell my story—usually a testimony about God’s faithfulness throughout my life. You’ll find some of these testimony pieces in my blog.

Even though I’d been creating for personal purposes, my friends, family, and even the guy who steam cleaned our couch and the guy who measured for window treatments, encouraged me to pursue. My whimsical art seemed to bring my house guests joy and strike up conversation. This spurred me on to take the next step. So, when I finally ran out of wall space, I figured it was time to do some pop-ups and sell my work. Smaller canvases and cards will be available soon, here on my site.

Feel free to contact me with any questions. If you are interested in Creative Arts, consider connecting with me via my blog.

Many moons ago a friend renamed me Megan Joy, and it stuck. This piece comprises some of my favorite scriptures on Joy. "You have turned my mourning into joyful dancing. Plumeria Promise Tree Canvas, Megan Joy Chapman, Art
Acrylics and Bible paper on canvas. Measures 36x48. SOLD
I was given my first Bible in 1995 by Miss Kim, my sewing supervisor, when I was designing and making costumes for a professional theater in Florida. Lost and broken at the time, I remember taking the Bible home, going into my room, and opening to Genesis 1:1 where I read, “In the beginning God created . . . “ It was like a veil suddenly lifted, and somehow in that moment, I realized that perhaps my life was not a random occurrence but perhaps there was a God who created me for a purpose. With my many questions, Miss Kim gently led and mentored me. Through friendship and Bible study she exemplified what a true follower of Jesus looks like. I became a lover of the Word and to this day, Miss Kim is like a sister to me. In 2015, when I came across my tattered green Bible where pages were falling out, I could not bring myself to toss it. Instead, I made a piece of art incorporating some of my favorite promises that have encouraged me over the years.
Psalm 145 Canvas, Megan Joy Chapman, Art
Paper, ink, and acrylics on canvas with Psalm 145 embedded in the background. Measures 20x24. SOLD
A dear friend and mentor of mine, who passed away, had given me Psalm 145 one year at Thanksgiving time. She told me that a friend of hers had given it to her and it had become a family tradition to read on Thanksgiving Day. The Psalm is about praising God’s profound greatness, remembering all He has done, and encourages us to pass His promises on to the next generation. Now, Psalm 145 has become my “Thanksgiving Psalm” and it always reminds me of my beloved friend and how she encouraged me.
Fly Me to the Moon Saxophone Canvas, Megan Joy Chapman, Art
Acrylics and metal on canvas. Measures 18x24.
Growing up in the Arts, I feel blessed to have been exposed to various styles of music including (but not limited to) Classical, Jazz, Rock, and Broadway. As a young girl, I remember going to my grandparent’s beautiful farmhouse in rural Massachusetts where Duke Ellington, Ella Fitzgerald, Frank Sinatra and other Big Band Legends played from a 1970’s state-of-the-art turntable. My dad, like his father, always favored the horn. I’m more partial to the smooth sounds of the sax.

Testimonials and Reviews

Megan Joy Chapman is one remarkable woman whose storytelling abilities & unique insights make the Lion Heart & Alessio series of books a delightfully rare combo of God’s Truth with laugh out loud antics. I met her in 1995 while working for Seaside Music Theater in their costume division. As her assistant in creating many original designs I was impressed and inspired by her many talents & dedication to be the best at whatever she undertakes. A true Renaissance Woman and a Joy to know.

The cast — in amazing, amusing costumes by Megan Hoyt – is as sensational as the show’s set, a cheerful rainbow-splashed soda shop/puzzle/livingroom designed by Bob Fetterman
